The three best-ranked UEFA teams at the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup China 2007 will qualify for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008.
Should the results of the FIFA Women's World Cup not clearly identify the three best teams, play-off matches would be held in order to determine the teams that qualify for the Olympic tournament.
In order to avoid any doubt, teams will be considered as having the same ranking if eliminated in the same stage. Therefore, teams eliminated at the end of the group phase will have the same ranking irrespective of their position, number of points or goal differences.
Also, according to Article 5.1 of the Regulations of Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008, and the approval of the FIFA Executive Committee, the England team is not eligible to participate in the Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008. In this regard, only four teams from UEFA are permited to qualify for the three slots at the Women's Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008.
Consequently, should England finish among the top three European teams in the FIFA Women's World Cup 2007, they would forfeit their position to the European team ranked immediately below them. Similarly, England cannot qualify for the play-offs, and will therefore be unable to participate in the play-off matches i.e. there cannot be play-offs between five teams.
