ENG-GER: Post-match quotes

Hope Powell, England coach
It was a tough match - tough for us, but tough for them as well. Germany are a fantastic team, they're the world champions. We improved enormously today. We had a tactical plan, and the players stuck to it. I'd have been delighted with all three points, but I'm happy with a point too. We've given a first-rate account of ourselves today. Taking a point off the world champions is a huge success and it's fantastic for us. We're satisfied and delighted with the way we've played today, but now we have to focus on Argentina.

Silvia Neid, Germany coach
It was a tactically good game from both teams. England were just as strong as we expected. I'm very happy with our defending, we were solid, we were confident, we worked hard in front of the back four and we tackled well. But we weren't direct enough in attack and made too many careless mistakes. We improved in the second half and created more chances, but we failed to put them away. England played very well in defence, they kept it very tight and did not allow us any space. We weren't capable of breaking them down today.

Faye White, England defender
We're delighted with today's result. It was a hard-fought match, and every player made a contribution to our success. Germany are world champions and have a very good team but we've shown we can hold our own against the leading teams. I had a very difficult year after my second torn cruciate ligament, but I set a target of making it to the World Cup. It was a massive incentive for me. I want to thank the coach and my team-mates for their support. They kept believing in me and telling me I was part of the team, because it was very hard for me as I spent so many hours on my own.

Kelly Smith, England midfielder
I'm just so proud of my team-mates today. We matched them, we dug deep, we kept going for the whole 90 minutes. I'm not going to say we're through yet but we've put ourselves in a good position.

Simone Laudehr, Germany midfielder
We're unbelievably disappointed, because we were determined to win. But we've already turned our thoughts to Japan. They're a very lively and busy team, so it'll be a very tough task.

Birgit Prinz, Germany forward
Well done to England, they were very disciplined today. We weren't at all creative, so we have to be satisfied with a point.
