Spain beat surprise package Japan 4-0 in the final of the 10th World Youth Championship in Nigeria. It is their first win of a FIFA title outside the Olympic Football Tournament.

In a championship game in which the Spaniards got off to a brilliant start taking the lead after only five minutes, Japan never really stood a chance of coming back. Spain's Pablo who added another two goals and one assist to his tally went on to win the adidas Golden Shoe for the best goalscorers.

Mali's superior speed gave them the edge in a fairly uneventful first half, but goalkeeper Carini should have held Keita's free-kick that gave the Africans their half-time lead. Both teams were more enterprising after the interval and created several good chances but failed to take the best ones. Mali retained their composure on the verge of their greatest international achievement to date.
