The FIFA Referees' Committee has confirmed that Malaysia's goal in their opening match against Morocco was an own goal by Morocco’s number 5, Safri.

In the incident, Malaysia’s number 11, Azmir, crossed the ball and it was not clear that it would have been on target.

Safri made a deliberate intervention and diverted the ball into his own net.

The decisive element in the FIFA definition of an own goal is that the defender played an active part in the goal, and did not merely deflect the ball accidentally.
