Argentina advance as Korea DPR lament

Argentina have won their Colombia 2011 group with late goals lifting the South Americans to a 3-0 victory over Korea DPR who return home in last place.

The Argentinians took a first-half lead through Facundo Ferreyra, while a late goal from Lucas Villafanez, and then from Adrian Cirigliano deep into injury time, blew out the scoreline.

Approaching the ten-minute mark Korea DPR failed to clear their lines allowing Carlos Luque to shoot over the goalkeeper but Hang Song Hyok maintained parity by saving on his own line.

There was bad news for Argentina at the half-hour mark as captain and central defender German Pezzella strained a muscle and was substituted by Leonel Galeano.

Argentina made the breakthrough on 36 minutes with Ferreyra on hand to push home a perfect cross from the left delivered by Carlos Luque.

Not to be deterred the Koreans enjoyed their best moment of the first half two minutes prior to the break. A perfect cross from the left from the boot of Jong Il Gwan found Han Song Hyok only his header to bounce agonisingly over the crossbar.

Korea DPR, knowing only a victory would maintain their Colombia 2011 hopes, returned after the interval with renewed vigour and Jong Il Gwan nearly found the back of the net following a Ri Il Jin cross.

However the Argentinians were in the ascendency by the midway point of the half as they started to create more openings. Firstly Luque screwed a shot wide of the far post, while Juan Iturbe, in a similar position minutes later, saw his effort blocked by a desperate Om Jin Song.

The Korean goalkeeper was at it again soon after, pulling off a great save to deny Ferreyra.

The Argentinian No9 was substituted and his replacement made an immediate impact with a smart finish to double the advantage. Villafanez volleying home on the turn after collecting Gonzalez Pirez’s pass.

The scoring was completed with the last play of the match as another substitute, Cirigliano, shook off a defender before curling the ball inside the right post.

The six-times world champions will stay in Medellin for their Round of 16 match, while the Asian champions conclude a desperately disappointing tournament without scoring a goal and just one point.
