Panama and Guatemala have overcome the odds to win through to the FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011, with the latter eliminating USA in winning their first qualification at this age level. Mexico and Costa Rica secured the other two CONCACAF positions on Wednesday.
Hosts Guatemala stunned USA with a 2-1 victory in their CONCACAF U-20 Championship quarter-final in front of an ecstatic crowd at the Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City. The historic goals were scored by Gerson Lima and Henry Lopez, the latter in the 69th minute against the run of play to break a 1-1 deadlock
Earlier in the evening, Panama, despite finishing runners-up in their group, ended the dreams of Honduras. Jose Alvarez scored with a deflected shot for Los Canaleros in the 51st minute and Cecilio Waterman added a clincher five minutes from full time. The qualification continues an impressive run by Panama who are now set to appear in their fourth FIFA U-20 World Cup, having missed out only once (2009), since their debut at UAE 2003.
Panama next will face Mexico in their semi-final on Tuesday, while Guatemala will meet Costa Rica.
