Chile and Portugal will both be missing influential figures as they will be without their injured captains when they face each other in the Round of 16 at the Commonwealth Stadium on Thursday.
The game
Chile v Portugal, Edmonton, 12 July, 17.45 (local
time)
The stakes
The winners will head to Montreal for the
quarter-finals on 15 July, where they will take on either Zambia or
Nigeria.
The players
Chile skipper Carlos Carmona tweaked his left
hamstring in the 0-0 draw with Austria in Toronto and he will sit
out the match against Portugal, though an ultrasound scan was
encouraging and he should be fit to return if the Chileans
progress. Meanwhile, Portugal captain Bruno Gama is out of the
tournament after cracking a bone in his right foot in the 2-1
defeat against Gambia in Montreal. No players are suspended for the
match.
The past
Chile and Portugal have not faced each other at
youth level before. They have met just once in FIFA competitions,
at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, where Portugal won 4-2. The
men's senior sides played a friendly in 1972, which Portugal
won by the same scoreline.
The words
"Portugal will be a tough match for us because they are
one of the best teams in Europe. We will have to go out and play
our best game so far. giving it all we have and playing as hard as
we can."
Jose Sulantay, Chile coach.
"No team likes to lose and we are no different. We didn't want to lose the last two matches (against Mexico and Gambia) but the team has recuperated psychologically now. I can't hide the fact that Bruno Gama was important to the team but that's football. Players get hurt and we have to come up with solutions." Jose Couceiro, Portugal coach.
"Tomorrow is going to be a very complicated game because Portugal are a team that play very well. Even though they finished in third place I think they are better than they showed in the first round and once you are in the Round of 16 it doesn't matter where you finished in your group. They are very strong physically so we know it's going to be a hard game." Nicolas Medina, Chile striker.
"I'm not too familiar with the Chile team though I know they have good attackers. We will do all we can to try and win. We will have to concentrate hard on not conceding a goal." Rui Patricio, Portugal goalkeeper.
