Argentina made sure of top spot in Group E after beating Korea DPR 1-0 on Friday 5 July in Ottawa. A goal from Sergio Aguero sealed all three points for the Albiceleste, sending his team through to the last sixteen and leaving the Asian champions teetering on the brink of elimination.
A tactically disciplined North Korean line-up gave the reigning champions a veritable scare early on, Chol Min Jong beating Argentina keeper Sergio Romero only to see the goal ruled out for offside. The incident sparked the South Americans into life, a sweetly struck free-kick from Atletico de Madrid striker Aguero nestling into the back of the net on 35 minutes. Just moments later, El Kun came agonisingly close to doubling his side's tally, his effort rebounding back off the post.
Korea DPR threw men forward in search of an equaliser after the break, contributing to an open second half with clear-cut opportunities for both teams, although the scoreline refused to budge.
The holders will now face the runners-up from Group D in the Round of 16. Korea DPR, on two points, must now hope to be among the best ranked third-placed teams in order to progress.
