Nigeria ease into second round

Nigeria breezed to a 2-0 victory over Scotland in Victoria Wednesday to book their place in the second round of Canada 2007, with captain Ezekiel Bala the two-goal hero on the night.

Bala's first came four minutes after the break when Solomon Owello streaked down the right side and crossed into the box. The shaky Scottish defence let the ball linger and then watched in horror as the forward steamed into the area and blasted a shot through the Scottish goalkeeper from just metres out. He could have doubled the lead in the 58th minute on a breakaway, but his shot only bulged the side netting, while Jamie Adams had the chance of the match for the Europeans near the hour mark, but he couldn't keep his header down when he was all alone in front of the goal. And with things winding down, the Scottish keeper could only parry a shot into the path of Bala, who made no mistake in the 78th minute. With a man advantage after the sending off of Efe Ambrose, Scotland's Lee Wallace forced a good save and Graham Dorrance saw his shot flash just wide in the dying minutes.

The victory puts the Africans on six points, even with also-through Japan, who will be their next opponents on Saturday. Bottom of the table, Scotland will try to salvage something from the tournament against Costa Rica on the same day in Burnaby. They are still technically alive, but will need a win and some other results to go their way.
