Victoria's packed Royal Athletic Park saw 2005 finalists Nigeria get their Group F campaign off to a winning start with an end-to-end 1-0 victory over Costa Rica on 1 July.

Though they struggled to bulge the net, the Flying Eagles did not disappoint with their attacking prowess and physical abilities, and in striker Brown Ideye they have one of the emerging stars of the tournament. His looping header from Uwa Echiejile's corner kick in the 75th minute gave the Nigerians a deserved lead, and his combination play with captain Ezekial Bala time and again tormented the dogged Ticos defence.

Worn down by the strength of the Nigerians, the Central Americans were clearly happier with a draw to that point, though they carved out enough clear opportunities to hint at their attacking acumen. They will need to access all of that in their next match against group leaders Japan on Wednesday 4 July, while the Africans will be anxious to build on their success that same day against bottom-of-the-pack Scotland.
