Young stars named

Young hopefuls from all corners of the globe have been biting their fingernails in anticipation and dread of the official announcement, but the final 21-man squad lists for the 24 teams participating in July's FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada are now in and set. Among a sea of semi-anonymous young hotshots are some names that are already well known across Planet Football.

Internacional's teenage sensation Alexandre Pato will be leading the lines for fancied, four-time champions Brazil, while Atletico de Madrid starlet Sergio Kun Aguero will be hoping to mime the star turn of Lionel Messi two years ago and bring yet another world title home for five-timers and all-time best Argentina. For Spain, Gerard Pique and Alberto Bueno will be featuring in La Furia red as everyone's favourite phenom Freddy Adu - playing in his third U-20 finals - will be captaining a hopeful USA. Mexico will be led by Barca starlet Giovanni Dos Santos and Carlos Vela - the amazing tandem who saw El Tri roar to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru two years ago.

The last instalment of the U-20 world showpiece in the Netherlands in 2005 saw Lionel Messi burst onto the world stage along with Nigeria and Chelsea star John Obi Mikel, Taye Taiwo of Marseilles and a whole host of other top performers. This summer's youth festival in six venues across Canada is bound to toss up a few new stars into world football's firmament.
