The South American championship in Asuncion, Paraguay came to a close on Sunday 28 January and saw Brazil finish top of the pack. They will be joined at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada by runners-up Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, while, as the top two finishers, Brazil and Argentina also book passage to the Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing in 2008 .

The fifth and final day of action in Asuncion saw Brazil triumph 2-0 over bottom side and defending continental champions Colombia. Goals from Lucas and Edgar were enough to see the Selecao pick up their ninth South American youth title and return to the Olympic Games after missing out on Athens in 2004.

Argentina needed a goal from Lautaro Acosta two minutes into second-half stoppage time against Uruguay time to secure the all-important second place position. Had it ended scoreless, Uruguay would have pipped the Argentines for a spot at the Olympics in Beijing. But in no small consolation, Uruguay will get the chance to participate at the U-20 world finals in Canada this summer thanks to their third-place finish.

The Argentines will be heading to both Canada 2007 and Beijing 2008 as defending champions.

In the match to decide the crucial fourth-place finisher, Paraguay edged out Chile 3-2 but missed out on a Canadian jaunt by virtue of an inferior goal difference. Despite the loss on the day, the Chileans were celebrating long into the night as they sealed a spot on the world stage.
