ESP - CZE match quotes

Miroslav Soukup, Czech Republic coach: "When we started in this World Cup we played (the holders) Argentina, then we played the champions of Asia, North Korea, and today we played against the European champions Spain, so I don't think we can have any harder opponents than the ones we have had so far. We knew we couldn't play an open game against Spain so I adjusted my tactics and we played accordingly. We didn't want Spain to get in with fast breaks and we tried to win the game with counter-attacks or set-pieces. The game developed exactly the way we thought it would."

Gines Melendez, Spain coach: "We deserved to win this match. I expected them (Czech Republic) to play as they have been playing. We are attacking while they are defending, defending, defending. The pitch was not very good for attacking football but I have to say thank you very much to the Local Organising Committee, to the Canadian people and all the spectators because that have supported us greatly and we have been very happy to share this World Cup with them."

Jan Simunek, Czech Republic captain: "It's very demanding to have two games in a row that are decided on penalties and it's very hard on the nerves of the whole team."

Gerard Pique, Spain defender: "All the guys are very sad and people were crying in the dressing room. Sometimes football is not fair but you just have to learn to accept it and keep an optimistic view for the future."
