Austria turn up heat on Canada

Tournament hosts Canada fell to their second successive defeat as Austria earned a narrow 1-0 win under a clear-blue Alberta sky and baking-hot sun at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on 5 July, 2007.

With temperatures hitting 32 degrees, the early pace was understandably slow and Austria had the best chance of a tame goalless opening period when Veli Kavlak released Bernhard Morgenthaler on the left and Canada substitute Michael D Agostino partially blocked his shot high onto the post. Early in the second half, Kavlak stung the fingertips of Canada goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as he turned his drive over, and from the resulting corner Rubin Okotie headed in the winner after 47 minutes.

Canada threatened an equaliser when Keegan Ayre's free-kick was nodded down by Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault before the ball bounced up onto the crossbar. An excitable crowd of 31,579 was desperate to cheer a Canadian goal but Simeon Jackson missed a last-gasp sitter after guiding the ball wide. With four points to their name, Austria are now packing their bags for Toronto, where they will face Chile in their last first round game on 8 July, while Canada stay in Edmonton for their clash with Congo hoping to climb off the bottom of Group A.
