Day two of the FIFA World Youth Championship Argentina 2001 continued with opening matches in Rosario, Salta and Mar del Plata.

African runners-up Ghana, in typically energetic style, proved too much for the rather limited Paraguayans although it was not until the second half that the Africans could convert their general superiority into a 2-1 result. Match two of a Group F doubleheader in Mar del Plata saw France hammer Iran 5-0. The French produced a thoroughly accomplished second half performance, but their final scoreline hardly did justice to the enterprise and industry of Iran in the first 45 minutes.

Minnows Costa Rica proved to be the surprise package in Group E competition in Salta as they trounced the Dutch team by 3-1. It was a physical first half, which turned the corner with Montero's header after 38 minutes. Earlier, Ecuador defeated Ethiopia 2-1 and will next face the Netherlands and Costa Rica play Ethiopia on Thursday.

In other action, African champions Angola and the Czech Republic drew 0-0 in Rosario and Oceania Champions Australia defeated Asian runners-up Japan 2-0. A defensive error on the hour by Haneda of Japan and great individual performance by Owens ten minutes later were sufficient for the Young Socceroos to earn their first three points.
