The FIFA World Youth Championship Argentina 2001 kicked off on 17 June with an emotional opening ceremony at the Vélez Sarsfield Stadium in Buenos Aires and a 2-0 victory for hosts Argentina over Finland. Maximiliano Rodríguez, in the first half, and Andrés D'Alessandro, in the second half, scored the goals for Argentina, whose next game will be on Wednesday, 20 June, against Egypt, who drew 0-0 against Jamaica.

Brazil won the clash of giants in Group B, defeating Germany 2-0 in Cordoba. The Brazil team, coached by Carlos César, had the game sewn up by half-time. Robert scored the opener after eight minutes, before slotting home his second goal on 22 minutes taking advantage of a mistake by Germany's goalkeeper, Tom Starke. Also in Group B, Iraq enjoyed an excellent start with a 3-0 win over Canada.

In Group C, solid play along with an outstanding performance from goal-scorer Oleki Byelik allowed Ukraine to defeat Chile 4-2. In the Group's other match, the Malvinas Argentinas Stadium in Mendoza was the venue for the first surprise of the FIFA World Youth Championship Argentina 2001, when China topped the USA 1-0. The only goal of the game was scored by Qu Bo after 50 minutes.
