After a long absence, Ethiopia staged an impressive return to top international football as they will be representing Africa in the next FIFA World Youth Championship in June/July in Argentina. Ghana and Angola,  complete newcomers at a FIFA event, and Egypt also qualified for the semi-finals of the current African Youth Championships thus booking their tickets for Argentina. African powerhouses Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa all fell at the first hurdle in the race to the title for the best African youth team.

The decisive stages of the group matches had been marred by crowd disturbances. The match between Cameroon and Egypt had to be replayed. Egypt won the match 3-1 and now will face Ghana in the semi-finals on Wednesday, 28 March, while Ethiopia will take on Angola on the same day.
