The New Zealand Under 20 team is one win away from winning Group 1 of the Oceania U-20 tournament. In a hard fought match against Solomon Islands the New Zealand were too strong defensively and on attack. New Zealand had many chances in the first half that either went wide or hit the post.

Their goal came in the 32nd minute when No.10 Chris Killen (who plays for Manchester City) placed a ball from the left wing which found No. 16 Shane Smeltz (Brisbane Strikers) with an open net. New Zealand's tall defensive line were too difficult for the shorter Solomon Island attackers to overcome and Solomon Islands had few chances.

New Zealand must now beat Fiji (who are also unbeaten) to be assured of winning the group. In the earlier game Fiji beat hosts New Caledonia 2-1. Fiji dominated the game throughout squandering many goal-scoring chances. Fiji too have many tall players like New Zealand and this should be an interesting match up to determine the winner of the group. Should Fiji beat New Zealand on Wednesday, then this would keep Solomon Islands alive as Fiji play Solomon Islands in their last game on Friday.

It looks like it will go to the wire in this group of death.
