Brazil gained their first victory at Germany 2010 but it wasn't enough to propel them into the quarter-finals with Sweden's win over Korea DPR enabling them to claim the other qualifying berth in Group B. It is the first time that As Canarinhas - ever-present in this tournament - have failed to make it beyond the group stage.
It became a goal-fest in the final three minutes as three goals rained in. Brazilian substitute Debora claimed two of them to extend her team's margin of victory to 4-1.
New Zealand knew their fate before the Dresden fixture after two successive defeats, both by 2-1. Nevertheless they approached the contest in a spirited fashion and caused problems for the South American team - particularly from corners and free-kicks.
Brazil bared their teeth with two early raids, Camila sending a meaty drive into the side-netting as early as the 5th minute. Not long after there was a mighty sramble close to the New Zealand goal-line and both Juliana Cardozo and Alanna made attempts to force it home. They got in each other’s way however and eventually the referee blew for a free-kick.
A right-sided corner found the Brazil goalkeeper Aline flapping and gave Rosie White two chances to get her shot away. Neither were good enough. Soon after she missed again at the far post.
Those misses becamew more costly in the 25th minute when Alanna played a through pass into the heart of the opposing defence. Briony Fisher stretched to cut it out but only succeeded in taking it further away from her goalkeeper and Ludmila was able to round Erin Nayler and score.
Nayler enjoyed some torrid moments. When Camila crossed the keeper diverted it back towards her own goal-line and only managed to get to it in time before it rolled into the net. On the other hand Nayler made some brave stops at opponents' feet several times during the 90 minutes.
It was surprising there were not more goals. In the 32nd minute Fisher soared to meet Anna Green's free-kick and managed to divert it towards goal. It bounced high up the post and away to safety.
Brazil sensed their efforts were all in vain but never stopped pressing forward and when a clearance was charged down, Alanna worked some space for a cross which Leah tucked away at the far post.
They came close to a third goal on several occasions before Debora showed great tenacity and control to make it 3-0 in the 87th minute. White immediately reduced the arrears at the other end but away went Debora again to score the fifth goal of the game.
