The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Germany 2010 kicks off in just a week from now. As of Tuesday 13 July, the global footballing stage belongs to the world’s best up-and-coming women players, as they take to the field in Augsburg, Bielefeld, Bochum and Dresden in search of glory. The next milestone in the build-up to the tournament was passed today with the publication of the official squad lists.
Spearheading the challenge for holders USA, winners of the previous edition in Chile, is super striker Sydney Leroux. The goal-getter made a huge contribution to her country’s triumph in South America two years ago, winning both the adidas Golden Shoe and the Golden Ball. "Sydney is an exceptionally important player on our team,” USA coach Jill Ellis told FIFA.com. "She’s up for every challenge and she’s an experienced leader. The tougher the match, the better it is for her."
Hosts Germany have also named a squad long on experience. Bianca Schmidt, Kim Kulig and Alexandra Popp have already earned senior caps, while Desirée Schumann and Marina Hegering previously appeared in Chile, as did Schmidt and Kulig. Coach Maren Meinert can also call upon 18-year-old Dzsenifer Marozsan, a technically gifted sharp-shooter who claimed the adidas Golden Shoe at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2008 in New Zealand. "This group has great potential," Marozsan recently told FIFA.com.
