Second-half goals from Marie-Laure Delie and Eugenie Le Sommer were enough to give France their first victory at Chile 2008 over China, lifting the French to second place in the group while leaving China languishing on one point from two games.
Neither side had many chances in a drab first half in which both sides were inclined to bypass the midfield in search of the forward line. Karima Benameur saved well from Lou Jiahui on ten minutes, while Delie almost scored with a cross-shot ten minutes before the break.
After the interval, France took hold of the game, and the Chinese back-line looked ever more nervous as the European side sent more players forward. On 70 minutes, France went into the lead when Melissa Plaza crossed from the right, and Delie nipped between two Chinese defenders to head in.
After a half-chance for Li Lin at the other end, the French made the game safe on 87 minutes when Delie calmly played in the unmarked Le Sommer, who finished powerfully. France, now on three points, face Argentina in their final match, while China must win against the USA in Temuco.
