Second-half flurry sinks England

After a tight first half in Chillan, the USA broke the shackles in the second half to score three goals without reply, and send Mo Marley's England side home. The USA will now face the winner of the quarter-final between Brazil and Germany.

The first half of the game was quite even, with both sides having chances to open the scoring. England's Brooke Chaplen went just wide with a powerful strike on 23 minutes, while the USA's Sydney Leroux went close on 32 minutes, after receiving a long diagonal ball from the left.

It was the Americans who broke the deadlock eight minutes after half-time. Substitute Christine Nairn broke down the right wing and crossed, and Keelin Winters soared above the English defence to head in. Five minutes later it was almost two, when Rebecca Spencer was forced into an excellent save from a Leroux header.

England maintained their shape and their discipline, but were unable to create many clear opportunities. At the other end, Alex Morgan and Leroux had half-chances soon after the hour, and eventually it was the ubiquitous Leroux who made the game safe, when she headed in from Nairn's corner. After being denied by the post in a swift counter-attack, the USA put the seal on the victory deep into injury time, Leroux completing her brace from another counter-attack to send the Americans safely through to the last four.
