After cruising into the semi-finals with two wins at the UEFA Under-17 European Championship, Germany secured their ticket for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009. The six top teams from UEFA qualify for the finals in Nigeria later this year.
In their first match on 6 May, Germany fought to a 3-1 comeback victory, after Turkey's Hasan Ahmet Sari had opened the scoring on ten minutes. Germany responded quickly to equalize with an 11th-minute goal from Kevin Scheidbauer. After the break, Christopher Buchtmann and Shkodran Mustafi added one each to give Germany the win.
Germany left little doubt of their intentions in their next match on 9 May, cruising to a 4-0 triumph over England. After three England corners within the first seven minutes, it was indeed against the run of play that Germany took the lead. Robert Labus, Lennart Thy, Kevin Scheidhauer and Mario Götze each found the net in the decisive victory. And Christopher Buchtmann played an active role, setting up three of the goals as the hosts secured their place in the semi-finals.
England must now beat Turkey on 12 May and hope Germany defeat the Netherlands, if they hope to reach the semi-finals. This is a task made harder for England by the fact that a late booking for Jose Baxter rules him out of their match against Turkey, where a point would secure a FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 ticket.
