First of all I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Nigerian people for the lovely way they've been treating us every day. As for the game, I thought it was superb. It was like a tennis match at times, with both sides going for it ball for ball. Japan are an excellent side who play a very fast game and because of that they were better able to adapt to the speed of the pitch. They gave us problems throughout, but we never gave up and got our reward in the end. That's one of the fundamental aspects of the Brazilian game and it served us well tonight.
Yutaka Ikeuchi, Japan coach
This defeat hurts. We played well but we don't have any points to show for it. Even so, the fact we put in a good performance for the whole 90 minutes gives us plenty of hope for what lies ahead. What was the key to the result? Well, in football the side that scores the goals wins, and we missed a lot of chances tonight. But that problem is not unique to the U-17 side. It's something that affects Japanese football in general. I don't know how far we can go in this tournament but if we play like we did today I'd expect us to reach the next round and then fight for a place in the semi-finals. I don't see why we can't do that.
