Dynamic Koreans break through

Korea Republic booked their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 with a simple 2-0 win over Algeria in Kaduna. The result sees the quick-moving Asians finish second in Group F, while the Algerians - without a point or a goal in their three games in the section - head for home with heads hanging low.

The Koreans were lively and looking dangerous straight from the outset. It took the fast-moving, dynamic East Asians only 12 minutes to open the scoring against the north African strugglers. Capitalising on a defensive mistake, Lee Jong Ho fired home after being fed in well from midfield.

The Algerians looked stunned and, often resorting to desperate fouling in midfield, were then two goals down after 22 minutes. Son Heung Min cut in from the left and fired a wonder drive inside the near post that left Algeria's goalkeeper with no chance.

The second half saw the South Koreans pick right back up where they left off in the first, pushing forward with menace and intent. But the 45 minutes failed to provide the spark of the first and ended without either net being bulged. Despite some clever attacking play from the Asian side, and a few desperate forays forward by the Algerians, the match had nothing more to offer the fans in Kaduna.

Group F finishes with Italy in the top slot while the Koreans follow them through to the second round as runners-up. Uruguay are also through to the round of 16 as one of the top third-place finishers, as Algeria - with a finals performance to forget - are headed for home.
