Ambitious Argentina held by Syria
The match quickly developed into a clash between Argentina's technical and patient approach and Syria's direct and powerful style. In the first half it was the Albicelestes who held the upper hand, their players' superior mobility helping create the clearer goalscoring chances. That the scoreline stayed at 0-0 was largely down to a quality display from Syria keeper Ahman Madnia.
The Argentinians would regret their profligacy as Syria turned the tables after the break. Having wrested control of possession, forward Mohammad Abadi was a constant menace, even hitting the bar with one well-struck effort. While Argentina could have snatched the game late on, they were never able to reproduce their first-half fluidity and looked distinctly second-best against the Syrian underdogs.
