Two FIFA U-17 World Cup first-timers meet in this Round of 16 clash at the FIFA World Cup Stadium in Jeju with an eye on reaching the quarter-finals of the competition. At the final whistle one team will be celebrating, but another will be packing their suitcases for a long journey home.
The game
England - Syria, Jeju, Thursday 30 August, 20:00
(local time)
The stakes
Having defeated Brazil and New Zealand en route to
topping Group B, the Three Lions will be favourites going into this
match, although they will have to be on their guard against a Syria
team who are more than capable of mixing it with the best. In the
group stage, they displayed a well-organised defence and a potent
goal threat, but then again so did England. A clash with Germany or
the USA awaits the winners of this game.
The players
England's Tom Taiwo is ruled out of the match
following his last-minute red card against Brazil, while
Syria's Ahmad Alsalih and Tamer Haj Mohamd picked up two yellow
cards in the group stages and have consequently received a one
match ban.
The past
England and Syria cross paths on the football field
for only the second time in history. Their one previous meeting
also took place at a FIFA youth tournament, the FIFA World Youth
Championship in 1991, when the sides drew 3-3.
The words
"The victory over Brazil will mean absolutely
nothing if we don't keep on progressing. There is a long, long
way to go and we have to remain totally focused,"
England coach John Peacock.
"I know that the players will be motivated when they take to the pitch - they will be full of running, full of heart and pride for our country," Syria coach Mohamad Aljomaa.
