Syria booked their place in the Round of 16 on Saturday by virtue of a 2-0 victory over Honduras at a rain-soaked FIFA World Cup Stadium in Jeju.

Honduras got out of the blocks quickly and as early as the third minute captain Alfredo Mejia tested Ahmad Madnia with a free-kick destined for the top corner. Two minutes later, Mejia went close again, this time flashing a right footed shot just wide of the post.

But just as the rain began to pour down, the Central Americans were caught napping and Syria went in front. Mohammad Abadi did well to keep the ball in play and cut it back to Haani Al Taiar who sidefooted home from six yards.

Thunder and lightning greeted the players as they came back out for the second half and once again it was Honduras who forced the initiative. Ronald Martinez came ever so close to scoring the equaliser, but his attempt was cleared off the line by opposing No15 Alaa Al Shbli.

With ten minutes to go Ahmad Alsalih received his second yellow card of the tournament for time wasting. However, he immediately made amends for his upcoming suspension by smashing an unstoppable free-kick into the top left hand corner of the net.

The result may have been a little harsh on Honduras, who exit the competition, but now Syria are celebrating a spot in the knockout phase as one of the tournament's best third placed teams.
