It took penalties to separate France and Spain at the FIFA World Cup in Jeju, but Spain ultimately remained triumphant to book a place in the semi-finals. The end result was perhaps a little harsh on France, who more than matched their opponents in normal and extra time, but there could only be one winner.
Despite both European sides showing plenty of effort and endeavour in the opening 45 minutes, the entire half yielded just one shot on goal, a tame effort from Emmanuel Riviere, comfortably saved by David De Gea. However, The game quickly livened up after the restart. With 52 minutes on the clock, Frederic Duplus found Henri Saivet who made an excellent run from deep. The forward ran into the box before dragging the ball back to Le Tallec who was left with an easy opportunity to side-foot home.
Bojan had two half-chances to score following France's opener, but he did have a hand in the Spain's equaliser in the 72nd minute. The No9's stinging shot from the edge of the box could only be parried into the path of Iago, who then fed Jordi. The substitute was left with an easy opportunity to fire the ball into the net, cueing joyous celebrations from the Spanish players and substitutes.
France shaded the balance of play in extra-time, but only just. De Gea pulled off a superb reaction save to deny Le Tallec his second of the afternoon, saving low at the near post following the striker's downward header. Bojan, too had a chance to score, but Keita turned the ball around the post for a corner. In the last seconds, Thibaut Bourgeois shot was parried into the path of Vincent Acapandie, but the substitute blasted the ball over the bar and penalties followed.
The two No5s, Mamadou Sakho and Nacho, blasted home their spot-kicks before Le Tallec and Sergio scored. Bourgeois saw his effort well saved, before Bojan's cheeky penalty put Spain's noses in front. Yann Avila did his job from 12 yards, as did Fran Merida. The pressure was on Alfred Ndiaye to keep his side in the game, which he did, but Daniel Aquino sent the Spanish through to the semis with a spot kick which no keeper could save.
