Magical Bojan spurs Spain

European champions Spain kicked off their FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007 campaign in fine style with a 4-2 win over Honduras in the opening game of Group C on 19 August. Both teams made light of the oppressive heat in the Ulsan Complex Stadium to serve up a highly entertaining encounter.

From the outset, Spain looked to use the full width of the pitch, turning the opposing full-backs and using their pace down the flanks. The tactic brought early dividends thanks to the awareness of star performer Bojan Krkic, who took advantage of lax defending to open the scoring.

Honduras refused to let their heads drop, coach Miguel Escalante shuffling his defensive pack cleverly before the unstoppable Christian Martinez levelled matters at 1-1. It was then the turn of Honduras keeper Marlon Licona to come to the fore, pulling out a series of brave blocks and superb reflex saves to keep his side in the game.

Unfortunately for the gifted shotstopper, it was his fumble, eagerly netted by Spain sub Jordi, which tipped the game in the European side's favour. Bojan's second of the night and Spain's third looked to have ended the match as a contest only for Honduras to fight back once more. The Central Americans reduced the deficit through Roger Rojas and threw men forward in search of an equaliser, yet up popped Jordi to score Spain's fourth and seal all three points.

The second matchday of Group C, also played in Ulsan, pits Spain against Syria and Honduras against Argentina.
