Hiroshi Yoshida, Japan coach
This was a very tough match for us and we were lucky to have won it. I am obviously happy that we are moving on to the semi-finals and my girls are also in a good mood at the moment. Ireland is a very tough team and they put us under heavy pressure. They have power, strength and height and we are not used to playing against teams like this. They have improved much in their passing game also since the European qualifiers.
Noel King, Republic of Ireland coach
I would like to congratulate Japan on a hard-fought victory. I am also so proud of how hard we worked and how far we came in this tournament. There’s not enough superlatives to describe how great these Irish girls are. It’s been a marvellous experience for our girls to be here and playing at this level. It comes to an end now. The girls are very disappointed but also very respectful in defeat. I’m not sure the first of Japan’s goals was a penalty, but that’s football and we have to get over it.
