Dave Edmondson, New Zealand coach
The result and the performance were both disappointing from our point of view. We didn’t play because Spain didn’t let us. They had all the possession and we just couldn’t get hold of the ball. We need to play with more passion and more as a team without each player trying to do things on their own. We gave away possession easily and made some very stupid mistakes, and I just hope we can show what we’re capable of against Japan.
Jorge Vilda, Spain coach
We had a comfortable win in the first game and there’s always the risk you might get over-confident. The opposite happened today, though. The team went out there to win right from the off and though we struggled to impose ourselves in the first half, we got those two goals in the second and could have had more. We created a lot of chances and played the passing game we like to play.
Sara Merida, Spain midfielder
New Zealand let us play our game, and that’s to keep possession of the ball. We were more comfortable and had more space. I concentrate really hard whenever I have a free-kick and I was lucky enough to put one away today.
