Ghana secured their first victory of the competition against Costa Rica in Wellington, but it was not sufficient to secure a quarter-final place for the Africans, with Korea DPR and Germany drawing in the other fixture.
After a slow start in which neither side established any dominance, Ghana opened the scoring with a fine goal on 19 minutes. Candice Osei-Agyemang broke free down the right and crossed, and Deborah Afriyie applied an excellent left-footed finish by the far post. Although Ghana dominated the remainder of the half, they were unable to add to their lead, with Afriyie and Osei-Agyemang both squandering good chances.
The Ghanaian assault continued early in the second half, with Costa Rican keeper Priscilla Tapia making good saves from Mercy Myles and Mantenn Kobblah. In the 66th minute Florence Dadson was left all alone in the box, but once again Tapia made a splendid save, as she did when substitute Isha Fordjour burst through on the right. The one goal was enough for Ghana, however, who go out of the event with a win.
