Also in attendance were Eduardo Li, the President of the Costa Rican Football Association (FCF); Hany Abo Rida, Chairperson of the Costa Rica 2014 Organising Committee (LOC); Tatjana Haenni, FIFA Head of Women’s Competitions; Sonia Bien-Aime, Chairperson of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Football Committee; and LOC Executive Director Federico Rojas.
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter
On behalf of FIFA’s Executive Committee I would like to express my gratitude to this beautiful country for its superb organisation of this World Cup. The national teams will leave here with truly wonderful memories of the perfect hospitality of the Costa Rican people. My thanks also to the government for their involvement in this successful project. Women’s football has shown its quality here and it is growing in this region.
On the possibility of increasing the number of participating nations
We will need to make an assessment after the tournament. We saw a ten-goal victory in one game and that’s not conducive to developing the game. Increasing the number of teams does not automatically lead to an increase in quality. We need to take an objective look at this.
Eduardo Li, President of the Costa Rican Football Association
We have reached the conclusion of one of the biggest projects taken on by the people of Costa Rica. We accepted this challenge in 2011 and it gives me great pride and satisfaction to say today that we have fulfilled it. In organising a World Cup we have crossed frontiers, dispelled old misconceptions and shown people what can be done. Costa Rica is now part of the history of women’s football. I would like to thank FIFA and its president for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to show the world what we can do. I would now like to make a call to the fans to set the seal on everything by filling the Estadio Nacional to the rafters in the final and breaking another record.
On the lessons the CFC has learned from the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup
Costa Rica’s human resources are a treasured asset. I am very grateful to the people who have worked on the LOC for their commitment and intense effort. They have shown that we are ready to take on any challenge on a human and organisational level, though we must continue to work hard in improving infrastructures.
Hany Abo Rida, Chairperson of the Costa Rica 2014 Organising Committee (LOC)
The tournament has been wonderful, a complete success. The people of Costa Rica have proved that there is more them than just their hospitality. They are generous and good hosts too. My thanks for all their efforts and hard work over the last two years. My hope is that this tournament leaves an important legacy for women’s football in this country and that the young girls who want to play the game are able to do so.
