Already qualified for next year's FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2014, Japan successfully defended their AFC Women’s U-16 crown with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Korea DPR after the match ended even at 1-1.
Miura Narumi opened the scoring in the 63rd minute but Korea DPR levelled matters only eight minutes later with an equaliser from Sun Hyang Sim. Korea DPR defender Kim Jong-sim missed her penalty after Japan successfully converted six penalties in a row to claim their second consecutive AFC Women's U-16 championship.
Meanwhile, China PR edged Thailand 4-2 on penalties to claim third in the competition, after regulation couldn't break the 2-2 deadlock. Rounding out the trio of Asian teams to book passage to Costa Rica 2014, China PR hit their equaliser in second-half stoppage time, denying Thailand an outright victory, and were then able to best their Thai opponents in penalties.
