Olympic Football Tournament, Sydney 2000
The Games of the 27th Olympiad will be held in Sydney from 13 September to 1 October 2000.
The organisation and staging of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games is the responsibility of the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG). In particular, SOCOG is responsible for organising the sports program of the Games, including preparing and operating all venues and facilities.
The NSW Government is underwriting the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and, through the Olympic Coordination Authority, is responsible for the planning and provision of the venues and facilities needed for Games' competition and operations.
For the first time in Olympic history, with the exception of the interstate football cities, all athletes will live in the Olympic Village, now under construction adjacent to Sydney Olympic Park. All competition venues will be within 30-45 minutes travel of the Olympic Village and all training sites will be within 45 minutes travel time (with 80% of them less than half an hour away).
Sydney's Olympic plan focuses on providing an ideal environment for athletes to perform at their peak. The Games will be held during Sydney's spring in mild weather conditions, with daily average temperatures between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius with low pollution and humidity levels.
As the only sport on the program played outside Sydney, football, through the Olympic Football Tournaments, will play a special role in sharing the Olympic spirit with all Australians.
