FIFA has announced that the United States has won the FIFA Fair Play Trophy in the Women's Olympic Football Tournament.
The US finished first in the classification ahead of China. The Americans had entered the Final with a large lead which they maintained despite receiving three yellow cards in the Final, while China received one.
The Fair Play Trophy is calculated on the basis not only of yellow and red cards but also on the general behaviour of the team and the entire delegation both on and off the field, including such elements as a positive attitude towards the game, attacking play, cooperation with tournament managers, respect towards opponents and officials, and so on.
As Olympic protocol does not permit FIFA to present the FIFA Fair Play Trophy during the Olympic Games, it is planned to do so within the annual FIFA World Player of the Year Gala, to be held in Lisbon in January.
Before the final two games in the men's Tournament, Brazil lead the Fair Play standings with Argentina and Nigeria equal in second place, and Portugal in seventh place.
