In the latest
FIFA.com user poll, we asked you to name your
favourites for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Rio de Janeiro 2007
- and to no-one's surprise, reigning champions and hosts Brazil
easily topped the poll with an overwhelming 59.01 per cent of the
votes. Our users are clearly impressed by the prodigiously skilled
Brazilians, who delighted the Cobacabana beach crowd by claiming a
place in the semi-finals with a spectacular 10-7 victory over joint
favourites Portugal, providing the perfect riposte to five goals
from superstar Madjer.
Portugal are out of the tournament but still collected 10.55
per cent of the votes to claim third place ahead of 2005 champions
France. The team supervised by star coach Eric Cantona, through to
the last four after a 6-3 victory over Senegal and now facing a
crunch showdown with Brazil for a place in the final, finished
fourth on 9.19 per cent, although French-speaking users actually
placed Cantona's men top of the pile on 37.41 per cent. Fifth on
4.53 per cent were Uruguay, also through to the semis.
However, the survey did produce one major surprise as the
option 'Another team' finished second on 16.71 per cent. It
seems
FIFA.com users provided yet more evidence of their
expertise and intuition when it comes to the game. On our Spanish
channel, 18.01 per cent of the votes went to this option,
suggesting some insider knowledge regarding surprise semi-finalists
Mexico. On the other hand, the votes may have been intended for
Spain and Argentina, both already eliminated from the tournament.
