Uruguay's fate at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Rio de Janeiro 2007 hangs on the outcome of the Italy-Senegal game earlier in the day. While an Italian triumph will render their clash with Japan meaningless, should the Senegalese prevail, then victory over the Japanese will see the South Americans through.
The game
Japan-Uruguay, Wednesday 7 November, 14.00 (local
time).
The stakes
Uruguay's game plan depends entirely on whether they are
still in the competition by kick-off time. If the
Celeste do need the win then outside factors such as
pressure will come into play. While Venancio Ramos's men have
had no trouble creating chances, they have consistently struggled
to take them, particularly from free kicks. An early goal, though,
should settle Uruguayan nerves.
The Japanese have yet to pick up a point and that could make them dangerous. Playing for pride should be more than enough motivation for Nenem's side.
The players
Both coaches have full squads to choose from.
The past
The only previous FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup encounter
between the two sides came in 2005 when Japan won 4-3, the only
time an Asian side has prevailed against South American opposition
in five meetings.
The words
A few of my players have been feeling the pressure, and
I've been trying to motivate them for the final match. This is
the World Cup and it's not just any old game so they need to be
ready to go out and get their first win against Uruguay -
Nenem, Japan coach.
Up to now we've been suffering more than we've been playing. To win we need to be relaxed. Let's see if we can do it - Venancio Ramos, Uruguay coach.
