Futsal World Championship draw pits Guatemala against Brazil
The draw for the Fourth FIFA Futsal World Championship, held Wednesday 23 August at the Casa Santo Domingo hotel in Antigua, Guatemala, the ancient capital city of the Central American country, has pitted hosts Guatemala against three-times world champions Brazil with Kazakhstan and Portugal completing Group A.
Sixteen countries will participate in the tournament , to be held 18 November - 3 December in Guatemala City. CONCACAF, Conmebol and AFC have three teams each, five teams hail from Europe, while Egypt and Australia will represent respectively Africa and Oceania.
In Group D, Iran will have to fare against three latin contenders, Argentina, Cuba and Spain. Newcomer Thailand has been drawn into Group B along with Egypt, Netherlands and Uruguay, while Group C is composed of Russia, Croatia, Australia and Costa Rica.
Preparations are proceeding on pace for the tournament, which will be held over two venues. The primary venue, the Polideportivo, is the former Plaza de Toros which is being converted into a 7,500-seat indoor arena. The second facility, the Gimnasio Nacional Teodoro Palacios Flores, built in 1946, is also being overhauled.
“This signifies a starting point for the development of football and futsal in the entire country,” said Rafael Salguero, Football Confederation Vice President from Guatemala. “This shows as anorganization we have the ability for this and much more.”
