JPN-BRA: Coaches' quotes
Zico (Japan coach)
I am happy about the performance but frustrated not to have beaten Brazil. We showed a lot of good qualities tonight. I am happy with the performance of the team but angry at the way we have been eliminated. It was a legitimate goal (by Akira Kaji) and a goal makes a lot of difference but we have played well in this Confederations Cup against Greece we had a lot of good chances and tonight too but we are out. Japan have proved they can match any team but for the future and to improve for next year we have to carry on working hard.
We can get better in every area, especially in terms of our mentality - this is important. Tonight my team experienced what it meant to play against a very strong team and to match them. I think they can take a lot of confidence from this experience.
It was a strong emotion for me facing Brazil. It was a little bit difficult because I am Brazilian and was brought up with that anthem and I played for Brazil for ten years. My heart was beating when I heard our anthem but this was a shortened version the real one is much longer so I don't know how I'd have been if it had been the full version.
Carlos Alberto Parreira (Brazil coach)
We had two targets in this tournament. It was the last opportunity to see a lot of players in official games and I've been able to field 20 players here. The second target was to reach the semi-finals and we've achieved that. We missed chances that would have won us the game against Mexico and against Japan today. Especially in the first half today we had opportunities to finish off the game. But Japan never give up, they're always fighting for the ball and they gave us problems in the second half.
It was a calculated risk making changes. We wanted to see some players who had not played before and we left key men at home like Cafu and Roberto Carlos. Instead we've taken a look at players like Cicinho, Gilberto and Leo. Now I've finished watching players, though, and we're going to try and pick our best possible lineup and not experiment any more.
It is going to be very difficult to play the host nation. This competition is very important to Germany and they rested some good players in their last match. They also have a day extra to rest. We have to think a lot about our lineup because some of our players are exhausted. They've not played at the top level that we're used to but it is understandable.
