Stat of the Day: Mexican shoot-out drama
There have been three penalty shoot-outs in FIFA Confederations Cup history with Mexico involved on each occasion, the latest leading to heartbreak for El Tri as they crashed out of the 2005 edition 6-5 on penalties in their semi-final match against Argentina.
Argentina defender Esteban Cambiasso's successful spot-kick in Hanover on Sunday 26 June was the second occasion that Mexico have been denied a place in the final of the tournament. Denmark beat Mexico 4-2 in a 1995 shoot-out after the scores were again level at 1-1 after extra time.
Mexico, however, did prosper from the spot in their play-off for third place against Nigeria in the same tournament. Again the sides were deadlocked at 1-1 before El Tri were victorious with five converted penalties to Nigeria's four.
