Australia dominated Mexico as the French win over the hosts
Defending champions Mexico got a wake-up call from the underdogs Australia in the second match of the day in Suwon. History repeated itself as Australia beat Mexico again, four years after their 3-1 win -- in the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup in Riyadh.
The Socceroos were on the offensive right from the start as they dominated Mexico throughout the match. Australia took the lead in the 20th minute when Shaun Murphy headed in on a beautiful cross by Steve Corica. Skoko's long range cracker 10 minutes into the second half closed the deal for Australia.
France got an easy win in the opening game of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2001 in Daegu. Steve Marlet opened the scoring for the French early in the match with a spectacular left-footed volley that found the back of the net from 10 meters out.
The Koreans started to show some good attacking potential after the break and came close to scoring on several occasions. A goal by Djorkaeff ten minutes from the whistle and a late one by substitute Wiltord gave the French a successful start into the tournament before a very enthusiastic and near-capacity crowd.
