It was a Men's Olympic Football Tournament that saw Argentina win their second straight title, Brazil fail to reach the heights they expected, and Africa reaffirm itself as a true power of the world game. Now FIFA.com asks you to name your team of the Men's Olympic Football Tournament.
Starting, of course, at the back: plenty of goalkeepers caught the eye at the event, including Nigeria's diminutive but lively Ambruse Vanzekin, and Cameroon's commanding skipper Amour Tignyemb. As for the defensive line, there is an embarrassment of riches. The champions were well-served in this area by the likes of Nicolas Pareja, Luciano Monzon and the flying right-back Pablo Zabaleta, but other sides had their stars as well, such as Brazil's attacking left-back Marcelo, scorer of their exquisite second goal against Cameroon, and Nigeria's adventurous Chibuzor Okonkwo, who scored a solo stunner against Belgium in the semi-final.
In the middle of the park, it is again the champions who demand the lion's share of the attention. Liverpool's Javier Mascherano, in his second Olympics, fulfilled all the promise of his first, while Fernando Gago of Real Madrid provided a cool head and a sure touch. And let us not forget Juan Roman Riquelme, the conductor of the orchestra. Other midfielders who shone in China included Brazil's mastermind Diego, Nigeria's Ogbuke Obasi - scorer of an unforgettable goal against Belgium - and Dutch strongman Evander Sno.
How can one choose between so many talented attackers? The candidacy of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria, star of the final, goes without saying. But the silver medallists, too, could make a case for the inclusion of Peter Odemwingie, Solomon Okoronkwo or Victor Obinna. And what of the Netherlands' Ryan Babel? Moussa Dembele, Belgium's quarter-final hero? Salomon Kalou of Côte d'Ivoire? Italy's elegant Sebastian Giovinco? The choice is a difficult one.
