The date 6 February 2008, Chinese New Year's Eve, is also of particular significance for the Olympic Football Tournaments Beijing 2008, as it signals that the competition's kick-off on 6 August 2008 is exactly six months away.
A FIFA delegation, led by FIFA Vice-President and chairman of the Organising Committee for the Olympic Football Tournaments Dr Mong Joon Chung, recently visited China for several days to check on the progress of preparations, particularly in the five cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao) scheduled to host the combined total of 58 matches in the men's and women's competitions.
The FIFA delegation was highly satisfied with the work of the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and the relevant authorities at the venues.
The draw for the group matches, scheduled to be held in Beijing on 20 April, will be the next important step in the build-up to the tournament. On the eve of the draw, a play-off between the second-placed teams in the South American (CONMEBOL) and African (CAF) preliminary competitions, namely FIFA Women's World Cup China 2007 finalists Brazil and either Ghana or Nigeria, will be held at the Workers' Stadium in the Chinese capital.
This year's Women's Olympic Football Tournament will be the first to feature 12 teams instead of 10.
