Sorimachi Yasuharu, Japan coach
We suffered for our small size today. The United States are very strong and very big players and my boys had a difficult time coping with the physical disparity. Our second half was much better than the first, but my players did not co-operate well enough as a team, and this is our main strength usually. We are having some problems in attack at the moment. We will need to review the video of this game and try to sort them out.
Hiroki Mizumoto, Japan captain
We are all about the collective approach. We don't blame anyone for missing their chances. We win as a team and lose as a team. Today we focused on attacking up the flanks and we had some chances now and then, but we weren't good enough at executing our plan.
Stuart Holden, USA scorer
It's a good feeling to get a goal in an international game. It's good for me personally, but even more it's great to help the team get closer to getting a medal.
Peter Nowak, USA coach
The first game of any tournament is always tough. My boys put in a real hard fight and I am proud of them. We still have a lot of improving to do, but we did some things very well tonight. This will be good for the players' confidence. For me, a first Olympic win feels very good - there's nothing better than that. The Japanese counter-attack was always something we had to worry about. We had a few lapses, and we need to learn from that in the next games.
