Boy from Belo Horizonte becomes Brazilian champion

Guilherme Gonzaga has secured his seat for the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2013 Grand Final in Madrid by becoming the new Brazilian champion.

17-year-old Guilherme successfully navigated his was through the Brazilian Qualification Final, held in Sao Paulo this past weekend, to claim his ticket to next month’s virtual world championship. The Belo Horizonte local defeated two-time national champion Gustavo Nascimento in a tense quarterfinal penalty shootout before eventually going on to win the Final by a comfortable 5-1 margin.

The FIWC has been travelling across the South American nation for the past few weeks with pre-qualification events taking place in eight Brazilian cities. Each event drew a large number of participants as players signed up for the chance to secure a seat at the Grand Final and with it the chance to win USD20,000 in prize money and a trip to the next FIFA Ballon d’Or.

Fans were treated to the best virtual football the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ host nation had to offer. The football fun wasn't just limited to EA SPORTS™ FIFA 13. With music, freestyle football displays and prize giveaways, the Brazilian qualifiers ensured that competitors and fans enjoyed themselves throughout the day.

Guilherme will be hoping for a Brazilian victory on both the real and virtual football pitch in the coming weeks as he travels to Madrid for the virtual world championship in May, after which Brazil host the the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013, taking place from 15-30 June.
