Spain-South Africa: Quotes
Vicente del Bosque, Spain coach
I think we have felt at ease at this Confederations Cup. We did lose against the United States, but even that was a positive experience for us. Today's was difficult for us, we were playing against a side that attacked us a lot. They played excelled football. In the first half, we could have won the match, but we missed some chances. But I think it was a good game of football, where both sides played very well.
Joel Santana, South Africa coach
It was a fantastic game; it was a match that either team could have won. Spain were luckier with set pieces, but as far as we are concerned, we have had a good Confederations Cup. So it's a positive experience for us and our players. We made lots of courageous moves, we tried to close them down. There was a little bit of lack of inexperience from our side when it comes to keeping possession a little bit longer, but with time they will learn this. Experience is acquired with time. I must say, I do believe we played very well. I'm very satisfied with our team, a team that was not well thought of. It gives us a very promising future.
Xabi Alonso, Budweiser Man of the Match, Spain midfielder
It was important for us to play this match against South Africa. We would have loved to play in the final obviously, but we are happy with third place. South Africa also wanted to finish third, and they played well. But I was happy with the way we dealt with every situation in this game.
Daniel Guiza, Spain forward
The two goals were not a matter of luck because I worked very hard. I always try to make the best out of the chances I get. I think we deserved more. We have to work hard as we build up to the World Cup.
Siphiwe Tshabalala, South Africa forward
We did a great job playing a big team, but we are very disappointed because we couldn't win. We gave them a chance to come back and we have a lot of things to improve before the World Cup next year.
Itumeleng Khune, South Africa goalkeeper
We are devastated, it was one of those matches where we had a lot of chances to win, but we let them come back. We worked very hard in a very difficult game. We always felt we had a chance and we fought until the end. The tournament has been a good experience for all the boys and we have learned a lot.
