Marcello Lippi, Italy coach
The USA were well organised, well drilled and fit. Everything they showed confirmed what I expected before the game. Oguchi Onyewu and Jozy Altidore caused a lot of trouble for us. We eventually got the ball moving well, but the US made it difficult for us. We are team players and we managed to solve our problems as the game progressed, especially after the expulsion of Ricardo Clark. We calmed down in the second half after a nervous start to the game and that was the key to our victory.

Daniele de Rossi, Budweiser Man of the Match
At the start we were too nervous and tense. We didn't win with our skills and technique alone tonight, but rather with the bond we have as a team. We stayed together in the game as we have done many times through the years. It was a tough match and the US are a good team. They never made it easy for us.

Andrea Pirlo, Italy midfielder
Playing the USA in the World Cup in Germany two years ago helped us tonight in a big way. We knew what to expect coming into this game. Spain and Brazil are very tough teams in this competition, but so are we. We need to stay focussed and move on as best as we can from this good start.

Giuseppe Rossi, Italy striker
It's a great feeling to help the team get three points. That's the most important thing for me. It was a satisfying feeling to score tonight, that's for sure. South Africa is a great country, they have outstanding facilities here and I think they will put on a fabulous World Cup next year too.

Bob Bradley, USA coach
playing down a man requires a lot of energy and I think that our fitness fell off as the game wore on. It's hard enough playing 11 on 11 at this level. When you go down to ten it gets that much harder. The effort of my team was good tonight and I can't fault the players for the work they put in. After the sending off (Ricardo Clark) we had to rearrange things tactically. We stayed compact and got forward, but we couldn't last in the second half.

Landon Donovan, USA captain
Our effort was good. We played well in the beginning and then we received, what I thought, was a harsh red card. After that we responded well and gave good account of ourselves, but playing 70 minutes a man down against a team as good as Italy is always going to be rough. In the end we couldn't hold it together and now we have to focus on beating Brazil.

Michael Bradley, USA midfielder
We have no choice but to get over this game. It's over now. We need to get our focus back and put our minds to beating Brazil in our next game. We have the ability to make any team uncomfortable and Brazil is no exception. Tomorrow is another day and we're still alive in this competition.
