South Africa-Spain: Quotes
Vicente Del Bosque, Spain coach
I'm very happy because we keep on showing that we are a great team that has been able to follow on from everything that was achieved at EURO 2008. We made it very clear that our aim today was to get another win, no matter which players we used. We've had a wonderful group phase but the toughest challenges are coming up now. I hope this Confederations Cup will be remembered for the good football the teams are producing and I think Spain, Brazil, Italy and Egypt are all contributing to that.
Joel Santana, South Africa coach It wasn't a good result for us but thanks to our earlier results we've made it through to the semi-finals. That's a fantastic achievement for South Africa and it's very important to our preparations for the 2010 World Cup. We've managed to spend a few days together and that's crucial. We've gone out to win and score goals every time we've played, not like Iraq, and I think that's been the key to our qualification.
Budweiser Man of the Match Xavi, Spain midfielder Obviously we're absolutely delighted to be making history with all these landmarks and records but I'm not interested in this debate about whether we're the best side in the world right now. We'll leave that to other people to decide. All we can do is to keep on working, keep our feet on the ground and focus on the challenges ahead, like the semi-final, which is sure to be a lot tighter and tougher than the games we've had so far.
David Villa, Spain striker
Getting maximum points in the group phase was one of our objectives when we came to South Africa and I'm happy that we've gone and achieved that, especially with the way that we've done it; by playing attacking football and without conceding a goal either.
Steven Pienaar, South Africa midfielder
We've just played the best team in the world and if you switch off for a second against them you pay for it. That's what happened to us when they missed the penalty and unfortunately we paid the price. At the end of the day, though, we're through to the semi-finals and that was our main goal in this tournament. We know it's going to be really tough from this point on but we are really up for the challenge and full of confidence.
Matthew Booth, South Africa defender
It's a bittersweet result for us. Getting through the group phase was the most important thing, of course, but it's not nice having to depend on other teams to do you a favour. Even so, we put ourselves in a position to go through and we have to be grateful to New Zealand for helping us make it to the last four.
